How to Detect if Someone's Lying to You by Watching Their Eyes

Did you know that you can detect if someone is lying to you only by looking at their eyes? Everyone we know uses low-stake lies for their own reasons, but there are people who use lies with an incredibly huge potential to impact their relationship, work position or even reputation forever. Detecting lies may fall under the description of a crime investigator, but with the right tips and tricks, you can avoid being a victim of a liar. Even though most liars are able to lie while looking you directly into the eyes and appear perfectly still as non-liars, the eyes of a human cannot lie for long. Therefore, it’s time to sharpen your lie-sensing intuition. Here are 5 signs to look for in the eyes of a suspicious person.

Look for Any Kind of Micro-expression

Micro-expression is a very brief facial expression (lasting about a fraction of a second) that people make in effort to conceal a feeling and more often it happens unconsciously. By detecting a micro-expression, it is perfectly clear that the person is trying to hide a truth from you. Usually, liars have a tendency to show an emotion of pain or distress by raising their eyebrows upwards and moving them towards the middle of the forehead. As soon as you notice a few short lines across their forehead, it’s safe to assume that the person you’re talking with is lying to you.

They Stare at You (Without Blinking Much)

It is known that when people lie, they avoid eye contact. However, when a liar lies, since they know that breaking the eye contact is a dead giveaway, they go for staring rather than maintaining an eye contact instead. Even though eye contact shows that the person respects you and truly listens to you, if it lasts longer than usually and it’s without blinking, it is probably because the person is focused on presenting themselves trustworthy, not being such. If the person is telling the truth, they will probably shift their eyes from time to time and easily establish eye contact again and again.

They Blink Rapidly

When liars are uncomfortable and stressed during lying, their blinking ratio increases significantly and it’s in a way everyone can notice it. If a normal person blinks about 5-6 times a minute, a liar blinks 5-6 in a brief succession. It occurs as a natural consequence of their fear of getting caught lying, so pay attention, because rapid blinking is a sure sign of a liar, unless the person is suffering from an excessive blinking condition.

Their Eyes are Darting

This is another natural and physiological reaction of a person who’s feeling uncomfortable with what they’re saying. It might be normal for people to have their eyes darting back and forth once in a while, but it is not normal to have it happening too quickly or too often during a conversation. Usually, liars have darting eyes when they’re trapped by a question from you that they don’t feeling comfortable answering it.

They Keep Their Eyelids Closed Longer than a Second

People who are trying to come up with a lie as an answer to a question of you tend to keep their eyelids closed longer than a second. That is a normal reaction of a person whose defense mechanism has activated. If the eyelids stay closed longer than a usual blink and that occurs when they see or hear something uncomfortable or when they’re telling lies, it’s very likely that you’re involved with a liar.
