Australian Rubbish Facts – Sector Definition

Every household generates rubbish and regardless of our huge efforts, there is no completely safe way to get rid of it. All methods of disposing waste involve a high environmental price tag. Much of the rubbish we generate ends up in landfills and tips, not at disposal sites. Even people who recycle waste end up creating waste, because not all materials can be recycled for further use. Whether you are disposing your rubbish with a vehicle and trailer or you hire a skip bin company, there are few interesting things you probably don’t know about rubbish in Australia. Here are few Australian rubbish facts you should know.

Rubbish Facts

Australia is the world’s second highest producer of rubbish per person with an average of 650kg per year. The highest producer of rubbish per person is the USA, generating about 715kg per year. An average Australian family of 4 people generates enough waste in a year to fully fill a 3-bedroom house from the bottom to the top of the room. When it comes to Australians in general, they produce over 18 million tonnes of rubbish each year.

A big number of Australians are not aware that the recycling of soda or other drink cans can save big amounts of energy. Recycling a single aluminum can provides as much energy as it could be provided if half of that can was filled with petrol. Coca-Cola claims that about 1.7 billion cans are being sold on a daily basis all over the world. Imagine if all of these cans are recycled. It could provide as much as energy as created by over 300 million liters of petrol. This amount energy would be enough to drive across Australia more than 230,000 times with a powerful vehicle.

Plastic bags represent a big part of the rubbish generated in Australia, since Australian use over 3.9 billion of plastic bags every year. The bad thing about plastic bags is that they are non-renewable resources, but they can still be recycled. If these +3.9 billion of plastic bags are recycled, they will provide enough petrol to power a car for about 450 million of kilometers. In other words, this would be enough for you to travel across Australia for about 112,000 times.

The most populous city in Australia, Sydney, counts about 4.6 million of citizens, who do take care of the rubbish they generate. However, they are often getting rid of waste that includes waste products. On a yearly basis, an average household in Sydney is wasting products worth over $1,000. These goods were bought but never actually used. A lot of this rubbish is food that went to waste.
