All you need to know about Magnetic Rotary Encoder

The term encoders refers to a type of sensors that are used to send digital signals whenever they detect a moving object. Encoders that respond to a linear motion are mainly divided in shaft encoders and linear encoders. When combined with devices for mechanical conversion (spindles, rack and pinions and measuring wheels), these encoders can furthermore be utilized to measure not only linear motion, but also speed and position.

There are various types of outputs for various types of encoders. For instance, the incremental encoders produce series of impulses with their movement. These impulses can be utilized in two main and very important ways: to keep track of the current position by being fed to a counter, or to measure the speed. There are also the so called absolute encoders that generate multi-bit words and are good and direct indicators of the direct and actual position. There is a whole variety of applications that makes use of encoders.

These are the applications for which they can be put to use: assembly machines, door control devices, robotics, labeling machines, lens grinding machines, x/y indication, plotters, analysis devices, testing machines, ultrasonic welding, drilling machines, mixing machines, medical equipment, converting machinery.

The biggest dividing factor among encoders is the sensing technology they use. It can be either optical or magnetic sensing technology. The difference between the two is that the optical sensing makes it possible for high resolution, high speed of operation and reliability in industrial environment to happen. A magnetic rotary encoder, on the other hand, is accountable for high operating speed, good resolution, high resistance to dust and moisture and a solid ground opposing forces such as thermal and mechanical shock.

If you are looking for technology that is highly resistant to grease, dust moisture and thermal/mechanical shock, then you are in need of a magnetic rotary encoder.

Just make sure that you pick the right kind of magnetic rotary encoder. For instance, a variable reluctance sensor is able to detect alterations in the magnetic field that are brought about by a certain movement of a given ferromagnetic object. The simplest of these devices are called magnetic pickups and consist only of a permanent magnet and a coil wound that is wrapped around. This type of sensor is used for speed measuring and in order to work it requires a moving target.

Yet another type of sensor utilizes a Hall effect and a permanent magnet so that the alteration in electrical resistance or voltage can be achieved. This type of sensor is available in both linear and rotary forms and has the ability to work at the lowest speed possible.
